Phase 1B: Finish Revealing the Hidden Feature
A second "digging" by board members and some tremendous effort by Jefferson groundskeeping staff revealed the entire outer hexagon of the fountain.
At our third gathering:
- water that had accumulated in the inner hexagon was pumped out
- fresh water was added
- the tiles were cleaned
- the second bacth of water was pumped out
- the final grime was sponged out
- a wooden cover was constructed for the inner hexagon and put into place and
- a waterproof canvas cover was put over the wooden cover to avoid further water accumulation
With the fountain fully revealed, it was possible for John ??? of ??? to assess the condition of the structure, make educated guesses at drainage, water supply, and electrical access. Both he and Susan Toomey Frost, author of Colors On Clay and 1958 Jefferson graduate, also assesed the condition of the fountain tiles. John is scheduled to give a preliminary report to the TJHSHPS at its annual meeting on April 8, 2010 in the Jefferson SUB.
